Rigging is the preparation, securing and movement of heavy loads using slings, shackles, hoists and cranes. A rigger’s role is to select the right equipment, check it before use, communicate clearly with the crane operator, and keep the lift area safe throughout the operation.
Equipment awareness, clear signalling and a working understanding of lifting hazards matter because a poorly rigged load puts people and property at risk, not just the load itself.
Rigging training suits people new to construction, oil and gas, manufacturing, logistics or shipping who want a recognised starting point, as well as riggers already working who want to formalise their skills at a more advanced level.
This page is a course-selection guide. It does not replace supervised practical instruction, and it is not a substitute for a workplace-approved lift plan.
IOCH’s rigging courses run from Level 3 (basic) through Level 2 (intermediate) to Level 1 (advanced). The number gets lower as the course gets more advanced — the layout below follows that order.
Basic / Entry-Level
Builds the foundation: rigging terminology, equipment awareness, basic inspection and safe positioning around a working lift.
Best for: People new to rigging who want a recognised starting point.
⚠ CONFIRM WITH IOCH: Level 3 entry requirements (age, documents, prior experience if any).
Intermediate
Builds on the basics: equipment selection, load characteristics, rigging arrangement awareness and communication during more demanding lifts.
Best for: Riggers with foundational experience moving toward independent work.
⚠ CONFIRM WITH IOCH: Level 2 prior-experience or Level 3 completion requirements.
Professional / Advanced
Covers advanced planning concepts: complex lifting-operation planning, coordination responsibilities and critical-lift risk assessment concepts.
Best for: Experienced riggers taking on planning, coordination or review responsibilities.
⚠ CONFIRM WITH IOCH: Level 1 prior-experience requirements and whether Level 2 completion is expected first.

The topic groups below give a general picture of rigging course content. Confirm the exact syllabus for each IOCH level before publishing — the groupings shown are proposed, not final.
⚠ CONFIRM WITH IOCH: Exact Level 3 / Level 2 / Level 1 syllabus breakdown, confirmed topic-by-topic.
Recognising slings, shackles, hooks and hardware, and checking them for wear or damage before use.
Understanding how weight, shape and centre of gravity affect a lift.
Basic concepts behind sling angle factors and how they affect load on each leg of a sling.
Standard hand signals and clear communication with the crane operator and lift team.
Identifying common lifting hazards and how to respond to them.
Understanding who does what during a lift, and where each role’s responsibility begins and ends.
Introducing how risk is assessed before and during lifting operations.
IOCH rigging courses combine classroom learning with supervised practical training, followed by assessment before a certificate is issued.
Attending the course is not the same as being authorised for every lifting task. Workplace authorisation depends on your employer’s own requirements, the specific operation, and any additional site-level competence checks.
⚠ CONFIRM WITH IOCH: Exact assessment format, passing criteria, and pass/fail resit process.
Use the guide below as a starting point, then let IOCH confirm the right level for your experience — this is guidance, not a fixed entry requirement.
Discuss whether Level 2 suits your current experience.
⚠ CONFIRM WITH IOCH: Minimum age, prior-experience thresholds, and documents required at admission for each level.
Learners who complete the course and pass assessment receive an IOCH certificate for the relevant level.
⚠ CONFIRM WITH IOCH: Exact certificate title, issuing organisation, and any documented accreditation or recognition.
If you need the certificate accepted by a specific employer or project, check directly with that employer before enrolling, since acceptance criteria vary between organisations.
